Honey and honeybees have long been associated with the human heart and love.
Cupid, the god of love, is said to have dipped the tips of his arrows in honey before firing them, his arrows likened to a bee's sting - with the sweetness of love there is always the danger of love's sting.
Honey is thought by many cultures to be a powerful “love potion”, encouraging feelings of attraction and romance. During a Persian wedding, the groom dips his little finger into the jar of honey, and feeds it to the bride. She then does the same for him. This ritual symbolises that they will feed each other sweetness and sustenance throughout their lives together.
In Armenia the bride and groom eat spoonfuls of honey, given to them by the bride's mother, to symbolise their happiness.
Saint Valentine, as well as being the patron saint of love and romance, is a patron of beekeeping… tasked with protecting the protectors of bees and ensuring the sweetness of honey.
